Water Damage Caused by Ice Dams

Accumulating snow acts as an insulator between the outside cold and your buildings roof. Normal heat loss and solar rays warm the roof causing the snow to melt, which then runs down the roof and reaches the overhang and begins to enter the home, especially if the gutters and downspouts are blocked. This is also known as an ice dam which forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow (water) from draining off the roof. Instead, the water flow backs up underneath the roofing materials causing water damage to your ceilings and walls.

Lower the Thermostat

-Stay away from floodwaters. If you come up to a flowing stream where water is above your ankles turn around and go another way. Six inches of swiftly moving waters can sweep you off your feet. 

-If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car and head to higher ground. Cars can be swept away by less than two feet of water.

FROZEN PIPES
Frozen pipes are often those exposed to the cold weather, such as those outside your house, or in cold areas
such as basements, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.
A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the
ice blockage inside the pipe is located,
but typically the rupture
is caused by the backflow pressure between the water source and the blockage. A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly.
To prevent pipes from freezing, here are a few steps you can take, according to The American Red Cross:
Be sure to completely drain water
from swimming pool and sprinkler lines, as well as outside hoses.
Open kitchen cabinets to let warm air near the plumbing.

These are the some of the reasons why sump pump failure happens:

No maintenance on Sump Pump:

It is recommended to keep maintenance of your sump pump to prevent from any backflow and causing flooding. Manufacturers recommend to keep maintenance of your sump pump every 2-3 months by:

• Cleaning the air hole in the discharge line

• Listen for unusual noises when the sump pump is running

• Sometimes the pump can run but not pump any water. This means the impeller has disengaged from the pump shaft or the check valve is installed backwards.

• Check that the discharge line  is not clogged or backed up

Spring Flooding in Your Frankfort Home

Advance Preparation

Watch for Pooling Water 

Look for places around your property where water pools, and channel it away from buildings. Make sure gutters and downspouts are clear of debris and they are directing water as intended.

Maintain Sump Pump 

If you have a sump pump, check to be sure it is operational before water starts rising. Consider a back-up generator to ensure your pump works when you need it most. Contact your insurance agent to add coverage in case your sump pump fails. 

Raise Storage Goods
